Spanish master luthier Ignacio Fleta, born in 1897, lived in Barcelona, Spain, until 1977 and is still considered one of the world’s most famous guitar makers in the field of luthiery.
Throughout his career, Ignacio not only built around 200 guitars, but also other instruments such as violins, incorporating many of the skills he acquired from violin making into his guitar-making. For example, his highly traditional and superbly executed finish—the so-called “Fleta finish”—remains legendary among classical luthiers to this day. He was also renowned as a master when it came to building guitars with cedar tops.
After Ignacio Fleta’s death, his sons Francisco and Gabriel took over the family business in Barcelona and continued to run it. To this day, the company remains family-owned, and Fleta instruments—then as now—are legendary and considered guitars of the absolute master class.
If you want to order a new Fleta today, you may well have to expect a wait of 20 to 25 years.
It is all the more gratifying that we are able to offer this rare and exceptional instrument.
This guitar is serial number 913, built in 1990. In other words, it is an instrument crafted by one of Ignacios sons.
Crafted with a solid cedar top and a back and sides made of fine, aged Indian rosewood, it delivers fantastic sustain and a truly outstanding tone. The bridge and headstock are made of rare Brazilian rosewood; the required CITES certificates are available and included.
The instrument’s technical condition was thoroughly inspected in our workshop and is in perfect condition: the frets show almost no wear, the string action is comfortable, the bridge insert has plenty of clearance, and the neck angle is perfect.
The guitar is also in excellent cosmetic condition despite its advanced age: This Fleta was played regularly and with pleasure, but at the same time was treated very well and with great care. There are some minor scratches and signs of wear, but overall, its condition is truly impressive.
