This rare Martin 1-21 built in 1893 is a model and year of manufacture from the world-famous American manufacturer that you really don’t see every day. Especially not in Europe.
It came to us in a badly damaged and unplayable condition.
At the owner’s request, we finally restored the guitar completely and made it playable again.
Munich Guitar Company is an official Martin service workshop and among everything else we do as luthiers specializes in the restoration of vintage guitars from Martin, Gibson and other American brands. We were therefore very much looking forward to this challenging job and could hardly wait to bring this great instrument back to life.
The following work steps were carried out as part of the restoration:
- Neckreset
- Badly glued back removed from Body and glued correctly again
- Repair of various cracks in Top, back & sides
- Bracing repaired and missing hoop joints added
- Bridge removed and reglued
- Fingerboard and bar frets reworked and dressed
- Missing bindings replaced, loose bindings reattached
- Complete lacquer retouching with shellac
- New bridge inlay made from bone
- Setup for pleasantly playable string action
The tonal result after restoration and setup is impressive, and it fills us with joy every time such rare, great-sounding and historically important instruments can be preserved.
