Ukuleles by John S. Kinnard are rare to find, especially in Europe, so we are all the more pleased to be able to offer this great instrument now!

Nestled in the foothills of northern San Diego County, just inland from the coast, lies the small village of Fallbrook, California. Known for its mild climate and laid-back lifestyle, artisans of many different genres practice their craft here, inspired by the beauty of the valleys and mountains that surround the town.

One of these artists is John S. Kinnard, an old-school luthier who has established himself as a master of his trade over the decades.

In his one-man workshop, John builds arguably some of the finest stringed instruments in the world by hand. He makes them piece by piece – shaping and molding the parts and putting them together to create instruments that not only look stunning, but also possess something that mass-produced products lack – the soul of the luthiery.

John has been building guitars, mandolins and ukuleles for over 50 years and is best known as the luthier of the globally played gypsy guitar brand Dell’ Arte.

As with many artists, he also finds his creativity in other areas, including oil and watercolor painting and jewelry making – talents that have made him the luthiery he is today.

Through painting, he developed an eye for proportion and style. Through designing and making jewelry, he learned to recognize even the smallest flaws and build with an attention to detail that has become the hallmark of his work as a luthiery. When talking about the construction of his instruments, the word “clean” is heard most often.

The use of high-quality materials, first-class construction and attention to detail result in beautiful instruments.
