Richard Jacob Weissgerber is still considered one of the most important and influential luthiers of the 20th century when it comes to Classical Guitars. Well-preserved originals are rare and coveted by players and collectors alike. Is this instrument a guitar built by Weissgerber himself? Presumably not, as the distinctive “brand mark” and label are nowhere to be found.
What is certain, however, is that this instrument, which was probably built in the 50s / 60s, is an outstanding and masterfully crafted Classical Guitar. Wonderfully lightly built with a spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides. The response of the guitar is quick and easy, the tone warm and balanced.
And this is where the exciting part of the story of this guitar begins: originating from a private collection, the guitar was probably built from unfinished Weissgerber original parts by a German luthier in the 1950s/60s, who had purchased / taken over the parts from the Weissgerber workshop. The construction, the beautifully carved Headstock, the outstanding sound and the build quality and appointments would underline this great story. Unfortunately, this cannot be verified and nothing is known about the luthiery himself who finished the instrument. What is certain, however, is the outstanding quality and sound of this beautiful and old guitar.
An original from Weissgerber of comparable quality and equipment would certainly be close to or over the €10,000 mark today.
The condition of the guitar is very good: good neck angle, comfortable string action, well-preserved frets, great patina, perfectly working old Rubner tuners. Cracks in the Top resulting from the guitar’s years of life are absolutely safe and have been professionally repaired.
